Women commission to take up
issues
Imphal,
Sept 04:
The Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW) while assuring on
September 2 to take up the recent case of the 9 year girl who
was raped by the 50 year old Ibopishak Singh of Sugnu Awang
Leikai, a man old enough to be her grandfather, has decided to
take up issues related to violence against women.
With such
sexual related abuses and domestic violence against women
increasing in the state, the MSCW has taken up many alike cases
and stood for the women of the state. The commission has also in
many ways tried to make the people aware of such related issues
in the state.
In this
connection, Dr. Jamini Devi, Chairperson, MSCW called on a press
meet on July 9 at the MSCW office in Lamphelpat wherein she
pointed out that sexual and moral abuse against women in the
state was increasing. She also announced a seminar on Indecent
Representation of Women in Media held on July 30 at the State
Guest House. She welcome experts from the various fields of
films, advertisements, other medias, NGOs and the advocates to
participate and put in their views for the betterment of women
in the state.
She also
pointed out that from April 4, 2007 to June 13, 2008 the MSCW
had so far taken up 55 cases which included 2 molests, 1 police
harassment, 2 police apathy, 1 sexual harassment, 5 rape cases,
Kidnaps, murders, matrimonial properties of widows to name a
few.
BJP questions over AFSPA
issue in North East

Rajiv Pratap Rudy, a BJP MP and a national spokesperson of the
party questioned the imposition of the Armed Forces Special
Power Act (AFSPA) in the North East region. “If the dangerous
ÜPOTAcan be repealed why not repeal the draconian AFSPA in the
North East? he questioned.
Talking to
media persons in Imphal on Thursday prior to his departure for
New Delhi, the BJP leader rued over the prolong imposition of
the AFSPA in the North East region.
Rudy then
blamed the Congress led Secular Progressive Front (SPF) in
Manipur for the deteriorating situation in the state.
The BJP
leader said that the law and order situation of Manipur is a
matter of serious concern with chief minister O. Ibobi Singh
unable to neither protect himself nor send out a message
assuring the safety of the people of the state, said Rajiv
Pratap Rudy, a BJP MP and a national spokesperson of the party.

Rudy lambasted the Ibobi Singh led Secular Progressive Front
(SPF) government in Manipur for the ‘deteriorating law and order
situation’ of the state. Stating that the state government
headed by the Congress party was already collapsing, he warned
that there was a big threat to the lives and properties of the
people of the state due to the extensive growth of insurgencies
which the government has failed to control. This is hampering
the development of the staten, he pointed out.
With regards
to the weight lifter Monika issue, the BJP leader stated that it
was a big loss to the country and the state and blamed the
Manmohan Singh led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) at the
centre, the Union Sports Minister and the concerned authorities
in their failure to help Monika in times of need. It is a
betrayal to the state of Manipur by the Congress government,
said Rudy while affirming that BJP was with the people of
Manipur in this Monika issue.
Quality education in
Manipur-Initiative begins

Sept 04:
With an aim to bring about quality education in Manipur, the
Employees Union of the Department of University and Higher
Education, Government of Manipur has initiated various steps.
These are
computerisation of library and internet facilities in colleges,
to issue new books, to accredit NAAC in colleges and provide
better infrastructures and furniture, to avail computers and
generators in the colleges and to open new in the state.
On the other
hand, due to unbearable demands from various insurgent groups in
the state, the Higher Education Employees Union Thursday
organised a sit-in-protest at their office located at Natyapat
Chuthek, Keishampat in Imphal West. The demands consisted to
various types like monetary, supply order, contract demands,
percentage on demand, etc.
During the
protest the union appealed to the various outfits and the
concerned authorities to make education a free zone and the
Higher Education Department a peaceful working atmosphere to
save the lives of the students. The union also appealed to the
outfits to stop demands of any sort from the department.
Speaking to
the media, Mr. S. Gourikumar Sharma stated that a peaceful
atmosphere was a must for a good education of the students.
Stating further disturbances in the educational system of the
state was hampering the education of the students, he appealed
to the various outfits to make free educational zones from all
sorts of troubles. This is for the future of the state, he
added.
Corporatisation of Meghalaya Electricity Board
Shillong,
Sept 04:
The Power Finance Corporation (PFC)’s delay to submit its report
will delay the formal corporatisation of the Meghalaya State
Electricity Moard (MeSEB).
The
corporatisation process started in 2005,but the PFC’s failure to
submit its report may cause further road blocks. The
corpratisation process is scheduled to end this month, but till
date the PFC has not submitted its report.
Amidst the
number of hurdles that have stalled the actual declaring MeSEB
as a company, official sources told NNN, “ Even if the PFC
lives up with its assurance to submit the report by the last
week of this month, the process of corporatisation of the MeSEB
will take a little bit of time.
The source
said, The delay can force the MeSEb to ask the Union Ministry of
Power to seek a little more time to transform the government-run
MeSEB into a corporate body.
Refusing to
tell the time limit that the government will finally corporatise
the state electtricty board, the source said, The delayed
process is expecting to go longer in view of the necessity to
transfer the assets and financial obligations that is already
existing. |
