Close shave for Sonia

 

Bangalore, Sept 04 (PTI) : A private aircraft carrying Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Finance Minister P Chidambaram today made an emergency landing at the airport here following a technical problem. Gandhi and Chidambaram were flying in a Falcon aircraft to Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu, sources at the Bengaluru International Airport said.
   

Cabinet okays delimitation report

 

New Delhi, Sep 04 (PTI) : The Union Cabinet today gave its approval to carry out amendments in the Delimitation Commission's recommendations for redrawing constituencies in seven states.
The amendments would be carried out in respect of Karnataka, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Bihar and Delhi. According to law ministry officials, the Cabinet approval would, in a way, consolidate all orders related to corrections and improvements brought about in the delimitation process initiated in these states.



Ratan Tata calls on PM


New Delhi, Sep 04 (PTI) :
Tata Group chief Ratan Tata today met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh amid the raging controversy and uncertainty over the Nano car project at Singur, even as
the corporate leader vowed to do his best to roll out his dream car as per planned October deadline.
Along with Tata were automotive leaders Rahul Bajaj, Brij Mohan Munjal and Ravi Kant who met the Prime Minister as part of the SIAM delegation.

 

Amartya Sen in IMF panel

 

Washington, Sep 04 (PTI) : The International Monetary Fund (IMF) today formed a committee of eminent persons, including Nobel laureate Indian economist Amartya Sen, to advise on any modification that might enable the body to fulfill its global mandate more effectively.
The panel, which will also assess the adequacy of its current framework for decision-making, will be chaired by South African Finance Minister Trevor Manuel, IMF Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn said.

 

Four more SIMI men held

 

Ahmedabad, Sep 04 (PTI) : Four people associated with the banned Student Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) were arrested in connection with the city serial blasts in which 55 people lost their lives, police today said. Those arrested are Abbas Sameja, Naved Kadri, Aiyaz Saiyeed, Javed Ahmed, police said, adding that apart from Abbas who is from Kutch, the other three belong to Ahmedabad.
