13-day-old baby gets new lease of life after critical kidney operation at TMC

A 13-day-old baby suffering from a rare congenital condition got a new lease of life following a successful operation at Tripura Medical College (TMC), Agartala.

Paediatric surgeon Dr Anirudhha Basak operated on the baby on April 7.

According to doctors at the hospital, the baby is recovering well and is able to pass urine and stool normally.

The baby was born on March 23 at a private nursing home in Agartala. During the eighth month of pregnancy, the parents came to know about the congenital condition through an ultrasound.

Initially, it was presumed that the baby was suffering from left-sided pelvi-ureteric junction obstruction with grade IV hydronephrosis. The parents later consulted Dr Basak for treatment.

Based on his advice, the baby was admitted to Tripura Medical College, where the required diagnostic tests were conducted. Medical investigations revealed that the baby was suffering from left-sided multicystic dysplastic kidney.

Due to this condition the Left kidney fails to develop properly, becoming a non-functional mass of cysts.

According to Dr Basak, this is a rare condition requiring critical surgery.

The surgical procedure was conducted on April 7 by Dr Basak and his team. The operation lasted around two hours, after which the baby was relieved of the condition.

The parents of the baby identified as Mandira Debbarma and Tonas Debbarma extended sincere thanks to hospital authorities after the operation. They hail from Rabia Narayan Para, Lefunga.
