In a remarkable medical success story, doctors at Tripura Medical College and Dr. BRAM Teaching Hospital have saved the life of an 18‑day‑old baby boy suffering from a rare and critical condition known as intestinal malrotation with midgut volvulus—a dangerous twisting of the intestine that can cut off blood supply and lead to fatal complications if untreated.
The infant, Ahadul Islam, was born on August 27, 2026, at Makunda Hospital in Dharmanagar to parents Rubina Begum (25) and Bilal Mia (31). Initially discharged after birth, the family noticed jaundice within a week and sought medical help.
During treatment at AGMC, the baby began vomiting bile repeatedly—a warning sign of intestinal obstruction. Suspecting a surgical emergency, doctors referred him to Tripura Medical College on September 12.
At the hospital’s Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU), pediatric and neonatal surgeon Dr. Aniruddha Basak led the case. After diagnostic tests confirmed midgut volvulus, the team performed an emergency surgery on September 14, when the baby was just 18 days old. Over two hours, surgeons carefully untwisted the intestine and corrected its abnormal positioning.
The post‑operative period was fraught with challenges, as the child developed sepsis requiring intensive monitoring, antibiotics, and specialised care. Despite financial constraints forcing the family to leave the hospital against medical advice after nine days, they returned for follow‑up on September 25. Doctors were relieved to find the baby recovering well, crying in his mother’s arms—a moment of joy after weeks of uncertainty.
Medical experts emphasised that green or bile‑stained vomiting in newborns should never be dismissed as minor feeding issues. It can signal serious intestinal obstruction requiring urgent surgical intervention. Timely referral, rapid diagnosis, and specialised neonatal surgery were crucial in saving Ahadul’s life.
