36 Kg cannabis seized in midnight raid by Tripura Police in Jatrapur

In a late-night operation, police from Jatrapur station seized 36 kilograms of dry cannabis from a remote tribal hamlet, exposing yet another link in Tripura’s shadowy narcotics trade.

Acting on a tip-off, a team led by Officer-in-Charge Partha Nath Bhowmik set out on Saturday evening with sub-inspectors Prasanjit Debnath and Amarkishore Debbarma, ASI Kafurai Debbarma, and other personnel. The target was the house of Nirmal Tripura in the eastern part of Kalachhara village, a location so inaccessible that officers had to abandon their vehicles a kilometre away and trek through rugged terrain.

Around midnight, the team reached the suspect’s home, woke him from sleep, and conducted a search. Inside, they discovered three plastic sacks stuffed with cannabis weighing a total of 36 kg. Nirmal Tripura was immediately detained and brought to Jatrapur police station around 1 AM.

Police confirmed that a case has been registered under the NDPS Act, and the accused was produced before court on Sunday. Investigators are now probing whether the stash was part of a larger trafficking network.

The raid site — a remote belt between Thalibari and Monai Pathar ADC villages, nearly 10 km southeast of Jatrapur — is known for its difficult terrain and limited access. Locals say even daytime travel there is risky, underscoring the challenges police face in tackling illicit trade in such areas.
