570 kg ganja seized, one arrested

A joint team of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Border Security Force (BSF), Tripura State Rifles (TSR) and Tripura Police seized around 570 kg of dry ganja and arrested one person during a raid in Surendranagar under Sidhai police station in West Tripura district, officials said on Thursday.

The operation was carried out late on Wednesday night following specific intelligence inputs about the storage of contraband at a house in the area, they said.

During the search, the joint team recovered dry ganja stored in 12 drums from the premises. The seized contraband was later transported to Sidhai police station for further legal proceedings.

Mohanpur Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Ashish Dasgupta said the total quantity of ganja seized during the operation was approximately 570 kg.

One person was arrested from the spot on charges of being involved in the alleged narcotics trafficking network, he said.

The identity of the accused has not been disclosed as the investigation is at a preliminary stage, the officer said.

Police said efforts are underway to identify and apprehend other members of the suspected drug trafficking network and ascertain the source and intended destination of the seized contraband.

The seizure is part of the ongoing anti-narcotics drive being carried out by central and state agencies in Tripura to curb the illegal trade in narcotic substances.

Further investigation is in progress, officials said.
