Silver ornaments weighing around 80 bhori and cash were allegedly stolen from a jewellery shop at Kali Bazar under the jurisdiction of Bamutia police outpost after burglars cut through the shop's tin roof to gain entry.
The incident came to light on Sunday morning when shop owner Amrit Debnath arrived at the shop at around 8.30 am. According to Debnath, the main shutter appeared closed from outside, but after he lifted it, he found that the shop had been burgled.
Debnath said he checked the showcases and drawers after entering the shop and found that the silver ornaments kept there were missing. Cash kept in the box had also been stolen, he said.
“After checking properly, I noticed that the burglars had tried to break the locked door at the back of the shop. When they failed, they cut the roof to enter the shop,” Debnath said.
He said the stolen silver ornaments weighed around 80 bhori and estimated their value at about Rs 3,000 per bhori.
“The main shutter was closed, so from outside everything looked normal. I came to know what had happened only after lifting the shutter,” he said.
Police reached the spot and began an investigation into the theft. Debnath said he hoped the investigation would lead to the identification of those responsible.
The incident has also raised concerns among traders and locals over night-time security arrangements at the market. According to the information provided, a night watchman is posted at the market, while traders and locals have expressed dissatisfaction over the security arrangements following the theft.
