Agartala, Feb 23: The Agartala Press Club will go to poll on February 26 next while Senior Photo Journalist Ramakanta Dey has been elected as secretary uncontested.
Addressing a press conference on Thursday, Returning Officer Sandip Dutta Chowdhury said, the election would be held for the posts of president, treasurer and executive members.
Sayed Sajjad Ali has been declared elected uncontested as vice-president, Ramakanta Dey has been elected uncontested as general secretary, Kamal Chowdhury and Abhishek Dey have been elected uncontested as assistant secretaries to the press club, he said.
Arun Nath and Jayanta Bhattacharjee have submitted their nominations for the president’s post while Ranjan Roy and Jakhir Hussain are contesting for the post of treasurer. The rest 9 candidates have submitted nominations for five posts of executive members of Agartala Press Club.
The RO said, the model code of conduct for assembly election is not applicable as was said by the DM on Wednesday last, but based on a report of Superintendent of Police, it is advisable not to hold the press club election now.
“I went through the details thoroughly and thereafter I discussed the matter with the competent authority. Moreover, as per the latest letter to the Agartala Press Club authority, the DM West issued some advisories following the enforcement of election model code of conduct and allowed to hold the Agartala Press Club election on February 26 next,” he told reporters.
He said that according to the DM’s advisory, the entire election process should be conducted in a closed premises or complex of Agartala Press Club, whereas rallies and gatherings following the election are restricted in the Press Club area.
