Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) has reached a significant milestone in medical education in Tripura with the approval of 100 additional MBBS seats.
From the 2026-27 academic session, the college’s MBBS intake will increase from 150 to 250 seats, enabling 100 more students to pursue medical education at the institution.
Welcoming the approval, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda for supporting the expansion.
In a social media post, the Chief Minister said the increase in seats would create greater opportunities for students from Tripura while further strengthening the state’s medical education system and healthcare infrastructure.
AGMC previously had an annual intake of 150 MBBS students. With the latest approval, the intake has risen to 250, which is expected to create additional opportunities for aspiring medical students in Tripura as well as the wider Northeast.
With an intake capacity of 250 MBBS seats, AGMC will now be among several established medical institutions across the country with a similar intake capacity. These include Maulana Azad Medical College in New Delhi, B.J. Medical College in Gujarat, Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute, SMS Medical College in Jaipur, Madras Medical College in Chennai and King George’s Medical University in Lucknow, among others.
The increase in MBBS seats at AGMC is also being seen as part of the broader emphasis on expanding medical education and healthcare infrastructure in the country.
