At Amjadnagar, first ever Rath Yatra becomes a journey shared across faiths

Along the India-Bangladesh border in Tripura's Belonia subdivision, preparations are underway for a festival the village has never witnessed before. 

In Amjadnagar, a small settlement better known for its Muslim-majority population, the wheels of the first Rath Yatra are beginning to turn—not through the efforts of one community alone, but with the participation of another.

The festival, traditionally associated with Hindu religious observance, has become a shared community undertaking in the village. As decorations take shape and arrangements gather pace, local Muslims have joined Hindus in organising the event.

For the Hindu organisers, inviting their Muslim neighbours into the planning process was a natural extension of everyday life in the village. The organising committee includes members from the Muslim community, who have taken part in the preparations.

One of those committee members described the invitation as an opportunity to reinforce relationships that extend beyond religious identities.

"It is for the first time that a Rath Yatra is being organised here in Amjadnagar," he said. "Even though it is primarily a festival of the Hindu community, they invited us to be a part of the celebrations. Responding to that invitation, we have come together to extend our full support to our Hindu brothers."

His words point to a larger aspiration behind the event. While the chariot procession remains rooted in Hindu tradition, organisers and participants say they want the festival to stand as a reminder that shared civic spaces can also become shared cultural spaces.

Calling the festival a symbol of communal harmony, the committee member said people from both communities were working collectively to give the event its full shape. "We believe this festival will send a strong message of religious and communal harmony and brotherhood," he said, adding that people from across Tripura had been invited to attend.

Rath Yatra, also known as the Festival of Chariots, is one of Hinduism's most significant religious festivals, dedicated to Lord Jagannath, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, along with his siblings Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra. The festival is marked by the ceremonial procession of the deities on elaborately decorated wooden chariots, symbolising their annual journey from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple.
