Ayurvedic Medicine Manufacturing Unit to come up in Tripura's Sabroom

In a major push to strengthen traditional healthcare services, the state government has begun the process of setting up an Ayurvedic Medicine Manufacturing Unit at the Integrated AYUSH Hospital in Sabroom, South Tripura district.

The proposed facility is aimed at ensuring a steady supply of quality Ayurvedic medicines within the state while reducing dependence on external sources. The initiative is also expected to reinforce Tripura's traditional healthcare system and promote the wider use of herbal medicines.

As part of the preliminary exercise, an Expert Committee under the National AYUSH Mission (Tripura) recently held a detailed meeting at the office of the Branch Officer (Ayurveda) under the Directorate of Health Services (DHS) in Agartala. The committee discussed the project's feasibility and prepared a roadmap for establishing the manufacturing unit at the Sabroom-based hospital.

The meeting was chaired by Branch Officer (Ayurveda) Dr. Gourishankar Bhowmik and attended by members of the Expert Committee along with senior officials, who reviewed the proposed infrastructure, operational requirements and implementation strategy.

Officials said the project is expected to significantly improve the availability of standardised Ayurvedic medicines across the state. Besides strengthening public healthcare, the manufacturing unit is also likely to create employment opportunities and encourage the cultivation of medicinal plants, providing a boost to Tripura's herbal economy.

The initiative comes as the state continues to expand its AYUSH infrastructure. Earlier, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha announced that Tripura would establish its first Government Ayurvedic Medical College and Hospital at Tepania in Gomati district.

The National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) has already accepted the state's proposal, paving the way for the new institution to admit 60 students from the 2026-27 academic session.
