Belonia Embankment works under scrutiny as Tripura steps up Flood preparedness

Tripura’s flood preparedness drive gained momentum on Monday as South Tripura District Magistrate Md. Sajjad P inspected the ongoing embankment construction in Belonia, acting on directives from Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha.

The inspection comes in the wake of last year’s devastating floods, with authorities determined to ensure that vulnerable areas are secured before the next monsoon surge.

Speaking to reporters, the District Magistrate confirmed that nearly 80 per cent of the 15‑kilometre embankment project has already been completed, with the remaining stretch expected to be finished ahead of the festive season.

He acknowledged public concerns over depressions in certain sections, explaining that the rush to complete work before the rains left little time for soil settlement.

The Water Resources Department has assured that permanent repairs, including double‑layer brick soiling, will be carried out after the monsoon.

Additional proposals have been submitted for retaining walls at weak points and for improving road connectivity in areas disrupted by the construction. Plans are also in place to plant bamboo along the embankment under a government scheme, strengthening the structure against future floods.

Reiterating the Chief Minister’s commitment, Md. Sajjad P assured residents that all outstanding issues would be resolved. “The Belonia embankment project is under constant monitoring. People need not worry — we are determined to prevent a repeat of the 2024 flood disaster,” he said.
