Bishramaganj incident: Bus drivers call for justice, launch strike

In the wake of the recent unrest in Bishramganj, bus drivers have suspended services along the Agartala–Sonamura route, demanding a fair and transparent investigation into the incident. Drivers from Sonamura have warned of an indefinite strike if justice is not delivered promptly.

One of the protesting drivers clarified that the alleged assault of a young woman had no involvement from the bus staff. According to him, the victim informed her parents but did not seek help from the driver, conductor, or fellow passengers, leaving others unaware of the situation. The bus was later intercepted at Bishramganj Bazaar by a group of miscreants who physically assaulted the driver and co-driver. Several passengers were stranded for hours, and some sustained injuries due to stone pelting and brick batting.

“We all fear for our lives. Unless the authorities resolve this matter, we will not operate our buses,” said another driver, echoing the growing anxiety among transport workers in the region.

Just hours after a passenger bus was allegedly attacked by Tipra Motha-backed miscreants at Bishramganj Motor Stand in Sepahijala district on Tuesday evening, a family from Agartala narrowly escaped a similar assault while returning home from Bagma, highlighting the growing unrest in the region.

Unidentified miscreants reportedly vandalized the family's vehicle in the Dewan Bazar area of Bishramganj. Fearing for their safety, the family sought refuge at the local police station.

A woman who was present on the bus said that the attackers were unfamiliar to them, but they were numerous and armed with machetes and other weapons, creating panic among the family of four.

In response to the escalating tension at Bishramaganj, authorities imposed a prohibitory order under Section 163 to prevent further unrest and maintain law and order. Police presence has been increased in sensitive areas, and investigations are underway to identify those involved in the attacks.

Meanwhile, Pradyot Deb Barma addressed the incident in a social media post, calling the events “alarming.” He emphasized that the issue transcends tribal or non-tribal identities and centers on the outrage of a woman’s modesty, which must be condemned universally. “Violence never solves problems—it only divides people,” he wrote, urging for peace and restraint.

He confirmed speaking with the victim and her mother, assuring them of full support, and also communicated with the Director General of Police, who pledged that the rule of law will be upheld.

On the other hand, a delegation from Tipra Motha, led by Block president Buddha Debbarma, submitted a deputation at Bishramganj police station. The delegation demanded justice for the young woman who was allegedly assaulted and called for strict punishment for the accused.
