With the by-election in Dharmanagar’s 56 assembly constituency approaching, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has stepped up its campaign, staging a massive show of strength through the “Yuva Shankhanad” program organized by the party’s youth wing.
Â
The by-election was necessitated following the demise of sitting MLA Bishwabandhu Sen. Speculation is rife both within the party and among the public over who will be chosen as the BJP’s candidate to succeed him.
Â
Friday's Yuva Shankhanad program saw the participation of several top BJP leaders, including the Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, State BJP president Rajib Bhattacharjee, ministers, MLAs, and a large number of party workers. From the stage, BJP leaders launched sharp attacks on the opposition CPI(M) and Congress, while calling on supporters to ensure victory for the party’s candidate in the upcoming polls.
Â
Meanwhile, discussions over candidate selection have intensified. Media reports suggest that names of some retired senior officials are under consideration, while local residents have voiced their preference for a candidate closely connected to the constituency rather than an outsider. On social media, nearly 40 to 42 names are being circulated as possible contenders, ranging from young leaders to municipal councillors, as well as former officials and contractors.
Â
The buzz around candidate selection has added to the political excitement in Dharmanagar, with both party insiders and the public eagerly awaiting the BJP’s final announcement. For now, the Yuva Shankhanad program has set the tone for the campaign, signaling the party’s determination to retain the seat.Â
