BJP to back Tipra Motha against opposition in select seats, says Minister Ratan Lal Nath

bjp to back tipra motha against opposition in select seats says minister ratan lal nath

In a significant political statement ahead of the upcoming elections, Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will extend support to Tipra Motha in constituencies where the party faces direct contests against the CPI(M) or the Congress.

Nath said the move is part of a broader strategy to prevent what he described as “anti‑state ideologies” from regaining political ground.

Speaking to reporters, Nath explained that in seats where Tipra Motha is locked in direct battles with CPI(M) or Congress, BJP voters will be encouraged to support Motha candidates. Conversely, he noted that Tipra Motha has advised its supporters not to back CPI(M) or Congress in constituencies where BJP is in direct competition with them.

Acknowledging that the final outcome rests with the voters, Nath asserted that both CPI(M) and Congress have lost much of their organisational strength in Tripura and are not in a position to secure major electoral victories. He pointed to the recent Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections, where opposition parties failed to win a single seat, as evidence of their declining grassroots presence.

Rejecting claims that the electoral environment is stacked against the opposition, Nath argued that success in elections depends on popular support, strong organisation, and a committed cadre base. Drawing from his own political experience, he recalled winning panchayat elections during the CPI(M) government, saying that “if people are with you, no administration can stop you.”

Nath further claimed that opposition parties have limited appeal among young voters, relying mainly on older, traditional supporters. He stressed that Tripura’s electorate has seen multiple governments over the years and will judge the performance of the BJP‑led NDA government accordingly.

At the same time, Nath admitted that if BJP, Tipra Motha, or IPFT fail to meet public expectations, voters could remove them as well. However, he maintained that the opposition is not yet in a position to mount an effective challenge to the ruling coalition.
