BJP's Jahar Chakraborty wins Dharmanagar By-election with record margin

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has scored a decisive win in the Dharmanagar Assembly by-election, with party candidate Jahar Chakraborty securing a record 24,009 votes. His emphatic victory has reaffirmed BJP’s dominance in North Tripura and sparked celebrations across the constituency.

According to official results, Congress candidate Chayan Bhattacharjee received 5,903 votes, CPI(M) candidate Amitabha Datta polled 5,957 votes, Amra Bangali’s Bibash Ranjan Das managed 273 votes, SUCI’s Sanjoy Chaudhury secured 224 votes, and independent candidate Brajalal Debnath got 124 votes. Additionally, 440 votes were cast under NOTA (None of the Above).

Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha congratulated Chakraborty in a heartfelt message on social media, writing: “I extend my sincere gratitude to the people of Dharmanagar for electing BJP candidate Jahar Chakraborty with a massive mandate. Your overwhelming support and trust make us even more accountable. We are committed to working tirelessly for Dharmanagar’s overall development, peace, and progress. Let us move forward together in this journey of growth.”

Other BJP ministers, MLAs, and office bearers also joined in congratulating Chakraborty, describing the victory as a clear mandate for development and stability. Party workers celebrated outside the counting centre with slogans, processions, and distribution of sweets, turning the town into a festive hub.

The by-election was necessitated by the demise of sitting MLA and Assembly Speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen in December 2025. Polling was held on April 9 with a voter turnout of 80.04 percent, reflecting the constituency’s high political engagement.

Counting took place at PM Shri Dharmanagar Government Girls’ School under strict security arrangements. DIG Rati Ranjan Debnath, SP Avinash Rai, and SDPO Jayanta Karmakar supervised a three-layer security system, including barricades, fixed pickets, and mobile patrols. Section 163 of the BNSS was imposed around the venue to prevent gatherings, ensuring a peaceful and transparent process.

With this emphatic victory, Jahar Chakraborty now steps into the role left vacant by Biswa Bandhu Sen, carrying the expectations of Dharmanagar’s electorate. For BJP, the result is not just a win but a resounding endorsement of its governance and development agenda in Tripura, strengthening its position as the state looks ahead to future challenges.
