Speaking to the reporters, public prosecutor Samrat Kar Bhowmik said, “After a long trial since the day of incident on August 3, 2019, the court found prime accused of the case, Sumit Choudhury, Sumit Banik, Sukanta Biswas and Omar Sharif guilty on Friday last under sections 302 (murder) and 34(common intention) of IPC and reserved the sentence. Saturday the district and sessions judge (west) Subhashish Sharma Roy sentenced all four convicts to rigorous life term imprisonment and fine of Rs 50,000 each”.
Deceased bank manager Bodhisatwa’s mother however expressed satisfaction and gratitude towards the judgement of the court.
“My son’s departed soul will finally be satisfied as the murderers will be behind the bars”, she said.
Out of the four convicts, Sumit Choudhury belongs to the family of a renowned jewelry store in the capital, Sumit Banik, a contractor, Sukanta Biswas, a service police inspector while Omar Sharif has past criminal records.
However, the case has triggered a lot of controversy after counsel for the accused, senior lawyer Pijush Kanti Biswas denied to accept the judgment and claimed it to be ‘illegal’ and ‘Bad’ and also questioned the knowledge of the judge.
Biswas claimed that there was no witness against the first two accused persons but the judge pronounced them guilty and hence they cannot be sentenced life term.
Although the judgement has been passed in regard to the case, a fresh appeal will be filed regarding the same at the earliest.
