Body of missing man recovered from pond in Khowai

A decomposed body of a man was recovered from a pond in the Bagan Bazar Tea Garden area under Dwarikapur Gram Panchayat in Kalyanpur of Khowai district on Monday morning, triggering concern among local residents.

The deceased has been identified as Sanjit Tanti (47), son of Sachindra Tanti. According to police and family members, he had been missing from his home for the past four to five days. Despite extensive searches by his family, his whereabouts remained unknown until Monday.

Local residents spotted a body floating in the pond early in the morning and immediately informed nearby villagers, who in turn alerted Kalyanpur Police Station. A police team reached the spot and recovered the body, which was found in a decomposed state after reportedly remaining submerged in the water for several days.

Family members and locals stated that Sanjit Tanti had long struggled with drug addiction and had been leading an erratic lifestyle. They believe his prolonged addiction had adversely affected his personal life.

Police have sent the body for post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death. Officials said an investigation has been initiated under the provisions relating to an unnatural death, while all possible angles, including the possibility of any foul play, are being examined.

The recovery of the body cast a pall of gloom over the Bagan Bazar Tea Garden area, with many residents expressing shock over the tragic incident. Several locals also observed that the case once again highlights the devastating impact of substance abuse on individuals and families.

Police said they are questioning family members and local residents as part of the investigation and that the exact circumstances leading to the death will become clearer after the post-mortem report is received.
