Boost to healthcare: Tripura CM opens new 50-bed hospital in state capital

Agartala, July 12: Adding another major healthcare facility to Tripura's public health infrastructure, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Sunday inaugurated the newly built 50-bed Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee Agartala Civil Hospital.

The hospital, built in a corporate-style model, was inaugurated at a function held on the premises of MTB Girls' School. The Chief Minister expressed confidence that the new hospital would significantly improve access to quality healthcare for residents of Agartala and its adjoining suburban areas.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Saha said the hospital will also offer evening OPD services ensuring greater convenience for patients. 

He described the project as a pilot initiative, adding that if the model proves successful, the government will consider extending similar facilities to the remaining 19 Urban Local Bodies across the state.

The Chief Minister said the government is planning to implement an Integrated Health System to strengthen quality healthcare delivery up to the primary level. 

Highlighting the hospital's infrastructure, he said every bed has been equipped with an oxygen supply, ensuring better preparedness for emergency and critical care.

Among those present at the inaugural ceremony were Mayor Dipak Majumder, Deputy Mayor Monika Das Dutta, Central Zone Chairperson and Corporator Ratna Kar, Health Secretary Kiran Gitte, Urban Development Secretary Milind Ramteke, Agartala Municipal Commissioner and NHM Tripura Mission Director Saju Wahid A, along with other senior officials.

Mayor Dipak Majumder described the hospital as a landmark addition to Tripura's healthcare system. He said the project was conceived under the special initiative of Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha and transformed into reality within just one year. He also said naming the hospital after Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee is a matter of pride.

The Mayor noted that although a hospital existed at the site during the previous government, it lacked adequate infrastructure. He said the present government has brought remarkable improvements not only in healthcare infrastructure but also in advanced medical treatment, resulting in a significant reduction in the number of patients referred outside the state for treatment.
He further claimed that the hospital is the first paperless hospital in the Northeast region.

Health Secretary Kiran Gitte said Tripura's healthcare sector has witnessed unprecedented transformation over the past four years. 

He attributed the progress to the Chief Minister's sustained focus on the sector, noting that his medical background has helped accelerate reforms and improve healthcare delivery across the state.

He said the hospital will play a crucial role in reducing the patient load on the city's major hospitals while making healthcare services more accessible, modern and inclusive.

Constructed at a cost of around Rs  24 crore, the state-of-the-art 50-bed hospital features a paperless registration system, enabling faster, more transparent and patient-friendly healthcare services.
