Gomati district’s Transport Department has come under sharp scrutiny amid allegations of rampant irregularities and the rise of a broker network operating alongside official staff.Â
Â
According to sources, nearly 30 private brokers are stationed near the office, compelling vehicle owners and drivers to route their paperwork through them. Those who refuse reportedly face prolonged harassment and delays in processing.
Â
The situation has raised serious concerns as some employees themselves are accused of colluding with the brokers. Reports suggest at least three staff members — hailing from Agartala, Santirbazar and Udaipur Tulamura — are allegedly acting as middlemen, charging extra money to process vehicle documents. This practice has sparked public outrage, with many questioning how government employees could exploit citizens in this way.
Â
Adding to the grievances, despite revised office hours mandated by the government, several employees reportedly ignore the schedule, forcing ordinary people to wait for hours. Complaints have also surfaced against the night guard, who allegedly neglects his duties, leaving the premises vulnerable after hours.
Â
Together, these issues point to a deep-rooted nexus stretching from senior officials to lower-level staff, creating a cycle of exploitation within the department.Â
Â
Local drivers and residents are demanding immediate intervention. Calls have grown louder for the Gomati District Magistrate and the State Transport Minister to step in, dismantle the broker network, and restore transparency so that citizens can access services without harassment.
