Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Thursday described legendary composer and singer Kumar Sachin Dev Burman as “the face of Tripura” while paying homage on his birth anniversary. Speaking at a morning tribute organised at Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan, the Chief Minister said Burman’s music continues to enrich Indian culture and remains a source of pride for the state.
Saha recalled that the venue itself once served as Burman’s residence, making the tribute deeply symbolic. He highlighted Burman’s decision to renounce royal privileges and dedicate himself entirely to music, building his own identity through perseverance and artistry. “It is not enough to simply remember him. We must honour him by keeping his creations alive and carrying forward his legacy,” Saha said.
Born on October 1, 1906, in Chartha, Comilla (then part of the Kingdom of Tripura), Sachin Dev Burman was a scion of the Manikya dynasty. His father, Nabadwip Chandra Dev Burman, a noted sitar player, was his first mentor. The Chief Minister noted that Burman’s music drew inspiration from rivers, rural Bengal, and the lives of ordinary people, blending folk traditions with classical influences from Northeast India and East Bengal.
Burman’s career spanned Bengali cinema, All India Radio, Hindustan Records, and later Hindi films, with iconic works in Devdas, Guide, Jewel Thief, and Abhimaan. His son, R.D. Burman (Pancham), carried forward the legacy, becoming one of India’s most celebrated composers.
Saha also highlighted Burman’s role during the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971, when his songs broadcast through Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra inspired freedom fighters. He noted that Burman’s music was not only artistic but also carried a spirit of resistance and hope.
Burman received several honours, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Filmfare Awards, National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer, and the Padma Shri, cementing his place as one of India’s greatest cultural icons.
The tribute programme was organised by the State Department of Information and Cultural Affairs. It was attended by Secretary Kiran Gitte, Director Bimbisar Bhattacharjee, senior officials, and distinguished personalities. Students of the State Music College performed Burman’s songs, adding a musical dimension to the homage.
