Highlight: Cash Rs. 90 lakh and the vehicle used in the crime were seized from the house of one of the accused in the crime- Prasenjit Paul, who is absconding. Another person was also detained in connection with the money.
Agartala, May 11: Tripura Police on Thursday arrested another accused into the sensational college girl gang-rape incident.
The prime accused- Goutam Sharma, who was arrested from his house at Maheshkhala area under Amtali police station within 24 hours of the incident, was remanded to police custody for five days on Thursday. During preliminary interrogation, he revealed the names of two other persons involved in the incident.
The second accused- Sudip Chetri was also arrested on Thursday following prompt efforts of Amtali police.
The third accused- Prasenjit Paul is absconding but cash Rs. 90 lakh along with the vehicle used in the crime were seized from his house.
After preliminary investigation regarding the source of money, police said, accused Prasenjit Paul is also involved in gambling (IPL) and illegal loan-related acts. His uncle Lakhan Paul was also detained for interrogation in connection with the gambling.
“In this connection additional special teams have been formed and raids are going on in various parts of the State to nab the involved accused persons and to gather more evidences by using scientific aids,” Tripura Police in an official press note said.
The further investigation is in progress, police said.
The victim was found unconscious on the bypass road and she was hospitalized in a serious condition two days ago.
Meanwhile, the brutal gang-rape incident of the college student triggered massive reactions in the state with several organisations and student bodies organising protests on Thursday.
Tripura Ganatantrik Nari Samity, a women wing of the CPI(M), SFI, DYFI and other organisations on Thursday gheraoed the police headquarters here and organised a massive protest demonstration demanding punishment of the culprits.
BJP leader Papiya Datta visited the victim in the hospital on Wednesday and assured that the culprits would get punishment.
