Agartala, Aug 11: Tension ran high at Majlishpur constituency in West Tripura district after Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman was attacked by miscreants on Thursday.
Roy Barman and several others were reportedly injured in the attack. He was shifted to hospital with head injury.
Meanwhile, in protest against the attack incident and demanding immediate arrest of the attackers, the Youth Congress activists staged protest in Agartala and gheraoed Chief Minister’s residence.
Speaking to the media, Congress leader Ashis Saha said, the party had given prior intimation to police for organizing Bharat Jodo movement from Ranirbazar to Jirania.
When the Congress leaders and workers reached Ranirbazar, the SDPO Jirania asked not to organize the Padyatra citing apprehension of breach of law and order since permission was not granted for it, Saha told the reporters.
He said, earlier the Congress had sought permission for another day also but police denied giving permission saying that BJP’s programme was scheduled on that particular day.
“When we staged road blockade in protest against the issue, police arrested us. While police were taking us to police ground in police cordon, the BJP-backed goons launched attacks at several places from Ranirbazar to Khayerpur areas. The whole incident took place in front of police but they acted in favour of the attackers,” Saha told the media.
Pradesh Congress president Birajit Sinha strongly condemned the incident and said an FIR would be lodged on Friday with names of the attackers.
“When the Congress leaders and workers were being taken to police ground, the goons pelted stones injuring Sudip Roy Barman and many others.
When contacted, Superintendent of Police, West Tripura- J. Reddy said that no permission was granted for the Congress’ programme. When the Congressmen tried to go ahead with their programme without permission, they were arrested.
He said, no attack was committed on the three vehicles in which the Congress workers were being taken to the police ground. According to the SP West, security personnel in adequate numbers were deployed. The police officer said that there were reports on an attack on the private car of the Congress MLA and he was asked to lodge a complaint.
CPM blames BJP for attack on Sudip:
The CPM Tripura state committee strongly condemned the attack on Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman and held ruling BJP responsible for the incident. In a press statement, the CPM also questioned the role of police and demanded immediate action against the miscreants involved in the attack incident. According to CPM’s statement, 11 leaders and workers including Roy Barman of Congress were injured in stone pelting by the miscreants.
