Agartala Nov 25: Political mercury shot up at Suryamani Nagar in Agartala and Santirbazar in the South district after ‘Tripura Banchau-Bharat Jodo’ rallies of Congress supporters were attacked.
According to the Congress leaders, BJP-backed goons launched the attacks while Congress party supporters, after obtaining permission from Police.
Congress leader Asish Saha said around 17 persons were injured while some of the Congress supporters fled away after the attacks and missing - the number of injured persons is likely to go up.
Condemning the attacks, Asish Saha launched a scathing attack on the role of the Police during the attack.
Narrating the attacks, Saha said, a group of goons attacked the Congress supporters with sticks and sharp weapons. The miscreants also ransacked and damaged the campaign van.
Lone Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman and Congress leader Gopal Roy also condemned the attack and criticized Police. They also slammed Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha who also holds the Home Department portfolio.
Later, Congress delegates met the IG, Law and Order at Police Headquarters in Agartala and informed him about the attack. The Congress leaders threatened to lay siege to the PHC if the attacks on the Opposition remain unabated.
Reacting to the violence, Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha said political violence has become a culture of the State since the regime of the Congress-TUJS era followed by the last 25 years of the Left Regime. It is very difficult to get rid of the violence within 4-5 years. However, he said there is no room for violence and appealed to all to ensure peace.
The Chief Minister also said Police have been given a free hand in dealing with the perpetrators.
A similar incident took place at Shantirbazar today after Congress supporters had brought out the ‘Tripura Banchau- Bharat Jodo’ rally. Scared at the attack, many Congress supporters ran away and the exact number of wounded persons is yet to be known.
