Tensions flared in Tripura’s political landscape on Sunday morning when the convoy of former Chief Minister and senior CPI(M) leader Manik Sarkar was allegedly attacked at Kalibazar in the Bamutia area around 10 a.m. The CPI(M) has accused BJP‑backed miscreants of orchestrating the incident, which temporarily halted Sarkar’s movement for nearly 40 minutes.
According to CPI(M) accounts, a group of individuals blocked the road as Sarkar was en route to attend a party organisational conference in Bamutia. The blockade reportedly prevented the convoy from proceeding, while one of the escort vehicles was allegedly vandalised. The situation remained tense until CPI(M) supporters, including members of its youth wing, gathered at the spot and resisted the attackers, who eventually dispersed.
Despite the disruption, Sarkar later reached the venue and addressed the scheduled conference. CPI(M) leaders condemned the incident as a deliberate attempt to intimidate opposition voices during the ongoing election season.
The alleged attack comes against the backdrop of heightened political activity in state ahead of the TTAADC Village Committee elections, where parties are engaged in intensive campaigning. CPI(M) has repeatedly raised concerns about the political environment, alleging intimidation and violence, while the ruling alliance has dismissed such claims.
The episode is expected to intensify debate over security arrangements for senior leaders and the broader issue of maintaining law and order during the polls. Observers note that the incident could further polarise the campaign atmosphere, with opposition parties likely to amplify demands for accountability and protection.
