Agartala, Dec 01: Expressing concern over the role of police in connection with the Charilam violence, the opposition CPI-M state secretary Jitendra Choudhuri accompanied by other senior party leaders Thursday met the Director General of Police (DGP) and demanded removal of two police officers of Bishalgarh Sub-Division.
Addressing a press conference here at Melarmath party headquarter Jitendra Choudhuri alleged, “It is very unfortunate that some police officers of the Bishalgarh sub-division aided the BJP goons while they were attacking our party workers on Wednesday. The police officers were found to be prepared to shelter those BJP goons.”
“I accompanied by our party leaders Pabitra Kar and Manik Dey met the DGP in deputation at the police headquarter and demanded him to remove the police officers – SP Ranajit Debbarma and another Rahul Das,” he told reporters.
He also expressed concern over the inhumane behaviour of the police in the GBP hospital and alleged, “The mortal remains of Shahid Mia who was killed in the violence by the BJP goons were supposed to be handed over to the family members and the party workers on Thursday morning after the post mortem so that they can pay the final tributes. But the police forcefully took over the custody of the mortal remains, beating up the family members and party workers who reached GB pant hospital to receive the body.”
“We demanded the DGP to take cognizance of the Charilam violence and immediately book the culprits who were involved with the violence. We also demanded him to restore the deteriorated law and order situation. The DGP had assured us of looking into the matter,” he said, adding that the opposition CPI-M party MLAs are reeling under a security crisis.
Jiendra Choudhuri on Thursday also demanded the DGP to ensure uniformed security for the party MLAs. He said, “It has been noticed that the BJP leaders holding the posts like Chairman are enjoying uniformed police security, whereas the MLAs of the opposition parties are reeling under security crisis, following which they are unable to move to their own constituencies even.”
The party alleged that the CPI(M) and other opposition parties are not allowed to function freely, run their offices or conduct normal political activities in the state.
