CPI(M) State Secretary and Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury announced that the party will place democracy, citizen services, and accountable administration at the forefront of its campaign for the upcoming municipal elections.
Addressing the press on Saturday, he said the party’s outreach will focus on uniting people around these demands to restore confidence in governance.
Chaudhury acknowledged that detailed discussions on municipal polls had been delayed due to the recent village committee elections, but assured that once the situation becomes clearer, the party will prepare in a united and organized manner.
Highlighting the state of urban infrastructure, Chaudhury argued that cities are not defined only by roads, water, and electricity but also by their social and cultural life. He alleged that in the past eight and a half years, Tripura’s urban environment has deteriorated significantly.
Despite claims of expenditure, he said, roads, drainage, and civic facilities in Agartala and other towns remain in poor condition, with waterlogging occurring even after light rainfall.
Chaudhury further alleged that political, social, and law‑and‑order disturbances have worsened in recent years. He claimed that citizens face pressure in everyday transactions, from land sales to house repairs, with forced commissions being demanded even for basic construction materials like bricks and cement.
According to Chaudhury, the core message of CPI(M)’s campaign will be to show people how to overcome this situation and establish a democratic, accountable administration. He stressed that the party’s goal is to unite citizens around these principles and ensure that governance reflects transparency and responsibility.
