Several CPM workers including a woman were reportedly injured in the attack. The woman- Piyali Chowdhury among the injured persons is now under treatment in the hospital.
The CPM in a press statement held BJP responsible for the whole incident and demanded immediate action against the attackers.
According to CPM, as part of country-wide programme, a protest march of the party’s Dukli unit was scheduled to be held at Hapania over various issues including price rise. Police was informed that Opposition Leader Manik Sarkar would remain present in the protest programme.
But, police on Wednesday night cited law and order issues and asked CPM to cancel the protest march, the press statement said, adding that the CPM, however, had decided to organize a public meeting instead of protest march.

At the end of the rally, it was noticed that the CPM leaders and workers including the Opposition Leaders were virtually cordoned off by the BJP miscreants. When the party workers tried to return home, many of them were severely attacked.
In the meantime, Sarkar interacted with the Chief Minister and DGP over telephone and informed about the incident. Besides, a group of CPM leaders and workers gheraoed police headquarters in Agartala.
A delegation among the protestors met SP West and created pressure for rescuing the party leaders and workers who were stranded at Hapania. After almost two hours, additional security personnel were deployed at the spot and CPM workers were rescued.
The CPM strongly condemned the incident and demanded immediate legal action against the attackers.
