Agartala, Feb 21: In view of a series of post-poll violence reported from various parts of the state, the opposition CPI(M) party is now concerned over the possibility of such violences on the day of poll result declaration on March 2 next.
The CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Choudhury accompanied by the Left front convenor Narayan Kar on Tuesday sought the intervention of the state election commission to ensure violence free result declaration and demanded for close monitoring of the EVMs in the strong room.
Addressing a press conference here at Agartala Melarmath party office, the party secretary Jitendra Choudhury said, “There were incidents reported recently after the day of the polling, where a group of BJP supporters hovered around the strong room at Shantirbazar and chanted ‘Joy Sree Ram’ and ‘Bharat Mata Ki Joy’. Similar incident was reported from Teliamura, where one person with a fake identity of election commission approached the security and tried to enter into the strong room at late night.”
“We demand the election commission to keep a close watch on the EVMs kept in the respective strong rooms across the state,” he said.
Choudhury said, “Since after the day of polling, there has been a continuous provocation from the end of some anti-social elements. People of the state this time voted in favour of peace and restore democracy.”
He however appealed to his party supporters to “maintain peace” and “not engage in any case of violence” in the run-up to the counting.
On the other hand, Choudhury on Tuesday rubbished exit polls made in recent days and said, “Such exit polls by some known or unknown media groups have no connection with the fact. It is simply to provoke over 90% of people who dared to cast their vote fearlessly this time.”
