Destination Tripura Conclave: Four arrested after assault on visiting Investor in Agartala

Police have detained four suspects in connection with the alleged assault on Guwahati industrialist Kamaljyoti Choudhury and his driver in Agartala on Thursday, a case that has cast a shadow over the ongoing Destination Tripura Business Conclave 2026.

The arrests mark the first major development in an incident that has raised serious questions about law and order and the safety of visiting investors.

The attack took place around 4:40 pm near Badharghat College Chowmuhani, when Choudhury was travelling in vehicle TR01-BV-0631 from a city hotel to the conclave venue at Hapania International Fair Ground. 

A motorcycle (TR01-AB-9200) reportedly collided with the car, sparking an argument. The driver, Tanmoy Deb, was allegedly beaten by several youths, sustaining severe injuries including a broken tooth and head trauma.

When Choudhury stepped out to intervene, he too was allegedly punched and forced to flee into a nearby battery shop for safety. Eyewitnesses said the businessman was visibly shaken, while locals alleged that police personnel stationed nearby failed to act immediately. 

The police have not yet commented on these claims.

Choudhury later declined extensive medical treatment, insisting his injuries were minor, and chose to attend the conclave under police escort. His driver was admitted to ILS Hospital before being referred to GB Pant Hospital for advanced care.

Senior officers confirmed that the detained suspects are being interrogated to reconstruct the sequence of events and establish responsibility. 

The incident has unsettled business circles, with observers warning that such attacks risk undermining Tripura’s efforts to present itself as a secure and attractive investment destination.
