Devotion meets Inflation: Tripura preps for Vishwakarma Puja amid price surge

As Vishwakarma Puja approaches, devotees across Tripura are preparing to honour the divine architect of the universe, Lord Vishwakarma, with reverence and enthusiasm. From woodcraft workshops and vehicle garages to engineering hubs, offices, and homes, the spirit of devotion is palpable as preparations began in full swing on Tuesday.

In Agartala’s bustling Battala market, idol sellers from various subdivisions have set up vibrant stalls showcasing intricately crafted Vishwakarma idols. Alongside them, vendors are offering puja essentials such as fruits, sweets, garlands, and incense. The scene is festive, yet subdued, reflecting a community eager to celebrate but constrained by economic realities.

Despite the footfall, many sellers report that sales have not matched previous years. The steep rise in the cost of raw materials used in idol-making has led to higher prices, deterring potential buyers. One idol seller lamented, “Many customers are coming but after hearing the price of idols they are going back. We are helpless… the rate of necessary items needed for making idols have skyrocketed".

The financial strain is evident across the board. Stall rents have increased from ₹400 last year to Rs 600 this year, and transportation costs have nearly doubled. Another seller shared, “Transportation expense was Rs 300–Rs 400 all these years but this year it doubled to Rs 600– Rs 700.”

Despite the challenges, vendors remain hopeful.

“The day has just started and we are hopeful that business might not be profitable but at least we can earn the amount we invested and not run into loss,” one seller added.

Even puja organizers are feeling the pinch. A local shop owner revealed that his budget of Rs 1000 remained unchanged, forcing him to opt for a smaller idol than in previous years. “The high prices are definitely affecting us but we have no choice,” he said.

While the economic burden has led to minimal spending, restricted largely to essentials—the devotion and enthusiasm for Vishwakarma Puja remain undiminished. The festival, which honors the celestial craftsman credited with designing the divine weapons and chariots of Hindu gods, also marks the beginning of the festive season in Tripura, culminating in the grand celebration of Durga Puja.

As vendors and idol makers brace for a modest turnout and limited profits, the community’s commitment to tradition and faith continues to shine through. In the face of rising costs, Tripura’s citizens are choosing devotion over extravagance—proving that the spirit of Vishwakarma Puja is built not just on craftsmanship, but on resilience and reverence.
