dm chandni chandran champions handloom skill training for shg didis in north tripura

A vibrant initiative to empower women through skill development and local enterprise took centre stage in North Tripura as District Magistrate & Collector Chandni Chandran visited the Juri Textile Unit at Jubarajnagar. Here, members of Self-Help Groups (SHG Didis) are being trained in the use of Chittaranjan Looms under the guidance of master trainers from the Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission (TRLM).

Placing the empowerment of SHG women at the forefront, Chandran’s visit highlighted how handloom training, creativity, and enterprise are converging to create new opportunities for rural women. The initiative is not only equipping them with technical skills but also nurturing their ability to produce vibrant textile products that reflect the cultural richness of Tripura.

Officials explained that the training programme is designed to strengthen the handloom sector by enabling SHG members to become self-reliant entrepreneurs. With the Chittaranjan Looms, participants are learning to craft high-quality fabrics that can compete in both local and wider markets.

The District Magistrate interacted with the trainees, encouraging them to view the programme as a pathway to economic independence and social empowerment. She underscored the importance of women-led initiatives in driving sustainable rural development, noting that the handloom sector has the potential to become a cornerstone of livelihood generation in the region.

Community leaders and TRLM officials present at the event emphasized that the project is part of a broader mission to integrate skill development with traditional crafts, thereby creating a model of inclusive growth.

Local residents hailed the programme as a turning point for rural women, who are now poised to transform their skills into sustainable income streams. The initiative is expected to boost both household earnings and community pride, while preserving Tripura’s textile heritage.
