Drug trafficker jailed for eight years

A special court in West Tripura has sentenced a man to eight years' rigorous imprisonment after convicting him in a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Special Judge Ashutosh Pandey convicted Suman Das under Sections 22(b), 25 and 29 of the NDPS Act and awarded the sentence on Saturday. The prosecution was conducted by Special Public Prosecutor Biswajit Deb.

According to the prosecution, Das was apprehended by police on the night of November 22, 2021, while allegedly selling heroin and Yaba tablets from a scooter at Howrah Market in Battala area under West Agartala police station.

Acting on specific information, a police team reached the spot and seized a quantity of heroin and Yaba tablets before arresting the accused.

Following investigation, Sub-Inspector Chinmoy Bhowmik filed a chargesheet against Das before the special court.

During the trial, the prosecution examined 12 witnesses, including the investigating officer, Deputy Director of the Chemical Examiner's Division Suman Kumar Chakraborty and Judicial Magistrate First Class Swastika Das.

After completion of the trial, the court held Das guilty and sentenced him to eight years' rigorous imprisonment.
