
Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Friday asserted that efforts were underway to ensure that Tripura gets clearance for 100 more MBBS seats so that the total tally for the undergraduate level medical studies rises up to 450. Currently, Tripura has a total of 350 MBBS seats in three medical colleges namely Agartala Government Medical College, Tripura Medical College and Tripura Shantiniketan Medical College.
“I still can vividly remember, when we were students, the total MBBS seats allotted to Tripura stood at 10 to 12. Due to consistent efforts of the government it has now increased up to 350. We were in talks to get 100 more MBBS seats for Tripura. Apart from that, a new medical college is also going to open here. We have allocated land for SHIJA hospital who are willing to set up a medical college as well as a super-speciality hospital there,” said Dr Saha.
Stating that Tripura has potential to become a medical and educational hub, Dr Saha said, “We have Tripura central university here. Apart from that, MBB college has been upgraded to Maharaja Bir Bikram State University. The National Law University has established a campus here. We have government and private law colleges operating here. The National Institute of Technology also has a dedicated campus here. The Tripura Institute of Technology is being upgraded to Tripura Technical University. In addition, six to seven private universities have arrived here in our state. In addition to all of this, 28 general degree colleges are also functioning across the state.”
The Chief Minister was speaking at the annual prize distribution ceremony of Shankarachrya Vidya Mandir located at AD Nagar, Agartala under his assembly constituency 8-Bardowali.Â
