Elephant wreaks havoc in Teliamura, affected families raised allegations over silent role of Forest Dept

Teliamura Oct 25: Si-Trang combined with Jumbo menace hit the residents across Teliamura sub-division.
In the dark of Diwali night when the entire state was in panic because of cyclone Sitrang, rogue elephants went on rampage and destroyed houses one after another.
At least three houses were vandalized by wild elephants in DM Colony area of Krishnapur assembly constituency under Teliamura forest department.
Forest personnel in charge of the ADS team of the forest department played the role of silent spectators.
Allegations have been raised on behalf of the conscious locals that a group of volunteers including the ADS team are looting the government money given by the department to drive away wild elephants.
Local residents further alleged that they have to buy firecrackers spending money from own to drive away wild elephants.
The victims of the incident complained that the wild elephant was destroying the houses in the dark of the night.
Even though the local people reported the incident to the forest department office on the phone, the forest staff did not come to the spot. In such a situation, the local residents and Volunteers in the area tried to drive away the wild elephants.
However, on Tuesday, forest department personnel rushed to the spot to inquire about the affected families.
On seeing the forest workers, the affected family members became enraged. They alleged that earlier too on several such occasions they were deprived of compensation. Following which they are unable to repair their broken houses that were destroyed by Jumbo attack.
The locals demanded the state forest department should stand by the affected families.
