In another remarkable healthcare achievement, the fifth successful kidney transplant was performed at Agartala Government Medical College and GBP Hospital.
This feat marks another milestone in Tripura’s growing medical capabilities, made possible through the sincere efforts of Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, under whose initiative kidney transplantation became a reality at the GBP hospital.
After four consecutive successful kidney transplants earlier, the latest procedure was performed on a 32-year-old youth from Kalyanpur in Khowai district. The donor, a well-wisher of the patient, voluntarily donated one of his kidneys on November 4, 2025.
The transplant was successfully conducted under the supervision of a joint team of specialists from Agartala Government Medical College and Shija Hospital, Imphal. Both the donor and recipient are reported to be stable and under expert medical observation.
From AGMC & GBP Hospital, the team included urologists Dr. Bijit Lodh, Dr. Mukut Debnath and Dr. Jiban Debnath; nephrologists Dr. Manas Gop, Dr. Samaresh Pal, Dr. Udayan Saha and Dr. Reshmi Das.Â
Representing Shija Hospital were urologists Dr. Soumyarendra Paonam and Dr. Maharabam Mahale and nephrologist Dr. Galliver Potsangbam.
The anaesthesia team included Dr. Bhaskar Majumder, Dr. Chirashree Chowdhury and Dr. Tapan Debbarma from AGMC, along with Dr. Anand Nagom and Dr. Apollo Khundakpam from Shija Hospital. The entire process was closely supervised by Senior Nursing Officer-in-Charge, Tapati Chakraborty.
It may be noted that the state’s first kidney transplant was conducted at the GBP Hospital on July 8, 2024.
Medical Superintendent Dr. Shankar Chakraborty informed that all transplants are carried out following strict protocols and approval from the authorization committee, ensuring compatibility and medical safety for both donor and recipient.
