First-ever higher education dialogue with student representatives held in Tripura

In a first-of-its-kind initiative aimed at shaping the future of higher education in Tripura, the state government on Wednesday organised a "Higher Education Dialogue" at the Sonar Tori State Guest House, where Higher Education Minister Kishore Barman interacted directly with student representatives from across the state.

The programme was attended by Director of Higher Education Animesh Debbarma and focused on gathering constructive suggestions from students to strengthen the state's higher education system.

Addressing the gathering, Minister Kishore Barman described the event as a historic initiative, saying it marked the first time the government had created a dedicated platform for open dialogue with students on issues related to higher education.

He said the objective of the dialogue was to identify existing challenges, explore practical solutions, and formulate policies through meaningful discussions with students. 

"This is not merely a government meeting. It is a platform for free and open interaction where students will speak and the government will listen carefully. The future course of higher education will be guided by the ideas that emerge from these discussions," he said.

The minister emphasized that a strong higher education system could only be built through collective participation involving students, educational institutions, and the government. He said open discussions and consensus-based decision-making were essential for the genuine development of higher education.

Highlighting the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, Barman said colleges in Tripura must evolve into centres of nation-building rather than merely institutions awarding degrees. He stressed the need to create a positive academic environment, increase student participation in higher education, and strengthen the quality of education across the state.

During the interactive session, students discussed several key issues, including the three major challenges faced by colleges, measures to improve the quality of higher education, promotion of skill-based and employment-oriented education, and ways to transform colleges into model institutions.

Participants also deliberated on strategies to increase enrollment in higher education by 50 percent by 2030, strengthen career-oriented academic programmes, and promote values of nationalism, patriotism and responsible citizenship through activities on college campuses.

The minister said the constructive suggestions received during the dialogue would positively influence future policy formulation and implementation. 

He added that similar consultations involving teachers, educationists and other stakeholders would be organised in the coming days to realise the state's vision of developing Tripura as an education hub.
