Five decades of waiting nears an end: Khowai River Bridge almost ready, locals await inauguration

five decades of waiting nears an end khowai river bridge almost ready locals await inauguration

The dream of a permanent bridge across the Khowai River at Kheyaghat—a vision cherished for nearly fifty years—is finally on the verge of becoming reality. Construction of the long‑awaited bridge has reached its final stage, with finishing touches underway before it is opened to the public.

For residents of Ratia, Durgapur, South Durgapur, Premsing ADC Village, Baganbazar, and Dwarikapur, the structure represents not just concrete and steel, but liberation from decades of hardship and isolation.

On Friday, local MLA Pinaki Das Choudhury visited the site along with officials from the concerned departments. He reviewed the progress, assessed the quality of work, and examined the remaining tasks. With construction nearly complete, the focus now lies on final preparations before the bridge is formally inaugurated.

For generations, the absence of a permanent bridge at Kheyaghat has been a daily struggle. During monsoons, rising waters made crossings perilous, disrupting access to schools, markets, and hospitals. Farmers faced immense difficulty transporting produce, students endured long detours to reach classrooms, and patients often struggled to reach medical care in time.

The demand for a bridge became a community aspiration, passed down through decades. Now, as the structure stands tall over the river, residents see it as a symbol of resilience and a promise of better days.

Once operational, the bridge will dramatically improve connectivity across the region. Travel between villages on both sides of the river will become faster and safer, reducing wasted time and eliminating long‑standing barriers. Farmers will be able to market their produce more efficiently, businesses will expand, students will reach schools with ease, and emergency healthcare will be more accessible.

Local leaders and residents believe the bridge will spark socio‑economic development, turning the area into a hub of opportunity. Beyond convenience, it is expected to foster stronger ties between communities on either side of the river.

For thousands of residents, the only question now is when the bridge will open. With construction nearly complete, anticipation runs high. As one villager put it, “This bridge is not just about crossing the river—it is about crossing fifty years of struggle.”
