Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced that Tripura has recorded a 12 percent increase in food grain production this year compared to last year, crediting youth participation and innovative farming practices for the achievement.
Â
Speaking at the State Level Kisan Mela 2025–26 and the conferment of Best Farmers Awards at Pragya Bhavan, the Minister emphasized that agriculture remains the backbone of Tripura’s economy. “Farmers are the key to our state’s development. Agriculture is not just crop cultivation, it includes animal husbandry, forestry, and fisheries. Our youths are now driving innovation in this sector, and they are reaping benefits,” Nath said.
Â
He highlighted that natural farming has expanded to 5,550 hectares, while organic cultivation has grown from just 2,000 hectares seven years ago to 26,500 hectares today. Tripura’s organic products such as bird’s eye chilli, ginger, Kalikhasa rice, and turmeric have already found demand in international markets like Germany.
Â
The Minister also noted district-level progress, stating that Sepahijala has achieved self-sufficiency in paddy production, followed by South and Gomati districts, with Khowai joining the list this year. Efforts are underway to make all districts self-sufficient.
Â
Nath reiterated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of making India a global grain storage hub, stressing that increased production, connectivity, and exports are vital to achieving this goal. “Our farmers work tirelessly to feed us. This mela is for them, to recognize their contribution and encourage further growth,” he said.
Â
As part of the program, 10 farmers were awarded Rs 50,000 each at the state level, 80 farmers received Rs 25,000 each at the district level, and nearly 300 farmers will be awarded Rs 10,000 each at the block level.
Â
Officials described the rise in production and expansion of natural farming as a significant step toward strengthening Tripura’s agricultural economy and ensuring food security.
