Forgery scandal rocks Tripura Biodiversity Office: Staffer held for embezzlement

A major financial scandal has surfaced at the Biodiversity Board’s Gurkhabasti office, where police have detained Surajit Chakraborty, a multi-task staff member, on charges of forging the signature of the office’s Drawing and Disbursing Officer (DDO), Dasu Chakma, to siphon off government funds.

Initial reports suggest the misappropriated amount stands at around Rs 3.5 lakh, but investigators fear the figure could be far higher—possibly between Rs 20 to Rs 25 lakh. Police have launched a detailed probe, scrutinizing official documents and financial records to uncover the full extent of the fraud.

According to police sources, irregularities in government transactions first raised suspicion, leading to a formal complaint. Following this, officers from New Capital Complex Police Station moved swiftly to detain the accused and begin interrogation.

The incident has triggered shockwaves within the department, with questions now being raised about whether others may also be involved. Authorities have assured that every angle will be thoroughly examined to ensure accountability.
