Former Tripura Governor Dr D Y Patil passes away at 90; CM & others express condolences

India lost one of its most respected educationists and institution builders with the passing of Dr. Dnyandeo Yashwantrao (D. Y.) Patil, former Governor of Tripura, Bihar and West Bengal. 

He died on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, in Kolhapur at the age of 90 due to age‑related health complications.

Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha led the tributes from Tripura, posting on social media, “Eminent educationist, former Governor of Tripura and Bihar, Padma Shri Dr. D. Y. Patil passed away at the age of 91. A visionary institution builder, philanthropist and respected public figure, he left an enduring legacy through his immense contributions to education, healthcare and public service. May his soul rest in peace.”

Born on October 22, 1935, Dr. Patil’s life was defined by his commitment to education and social welfare. Honoured with the Padma Shri in 1991, he went on to establish the D Y Patil Group, which today runs more than 182 educational institutions and seven deemed universities across India. His initiatives provided opportunities for thousands of students and reshaped the higher education landscape.

Dr. Patil also had a distinguished public career. He served as an MLA in Maharashtra before being appointed Governor of Tripura (2009–2013), later holding gubernatorial responsibilities in Bihar and West Bengal. His tenure in Tripura is remembered for his emphasis on strengthening higher education and expanding opportunities for youth.

Tributes have poured in from across the country, with leaders, academics and citizens remembering him as a pioneer who combined institution building with philanthropy. His passing has been described as the end of an era in Indian education and public life, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire generations.
