From Carpenter to Mushroom Entrepreneur: Jitendra Debnath's journey of self-reliance in Tripura

In Jirania subdivision’s West Majlishpur Gram Panchayat, the inspiring journey of Jitendra Debnath has become a talking point in Tripura’s rural economy. Once a carpenter by trade, Debnath shifted to farming under the weight of financial uncertainty and family responsibilities. 

Starting with just 0.16 hectares of land, he began cultivating vegetables such as gourds, beans, chillies, brinjal, cucumbers, and leafy greens. Over time, his determination led him to explore mushroom farming, a venture that has transformed his livelihood.

Initially, Debnath’s mushroom cultivation was modest, aimed at meeting household needs. Limited production and marketing challenges meant little profit, but his persistence and openness to modern methods kept him going. 

His efforts soon drew the attention of local agricultural officers, who recognized his potential as a budding entrepreneur. With their guidance and technical support, Debnath refined his practices and expanded his scope.

A turning point came when he received assistance under the MIDH Project, securing a subsidy of Rs 1 lakh to establish a low-cost mushroom production unit. With this support, he set up a structured oyster mushroom cultivation initiative across nearly 200 square metres, adopting improved techniques and benefiting from regular training and field-level advice provided by block technology managers, assistant technology managers, and sector officers.

The results were swift. Mushroom farming, with its high nutritional value and strong market demand, began to generate significant income, lifting his family’s socio-economic condition. 

Today, Debnath’s enterprise stands as a model of how marginal farmers can overcome constraints through innovation, hard work, and institutional support.

Officials note that his success story is not just personal—it reflects the broader potential of rural entrepreneurship in Tripura. 

By combining traditional vegetable farming with modern mushroom cultivation, Debnath has shown how limited land can be turned into a fertile ground for opportunity. His journey embodies the vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat, where self-reliance and grassroots innovation drive rural prosperity.
