Tipra Motha party workers on Tuesday withdrew their road blockade restraining t traffic movement between Udaipur-Amarpur road after two persons were detained in connection with the firing on Tipra Motha candidate in Udaipur’s Gamaria.
Senior Tipra Motha leaders under the leadership of rebel-turned-MLA Ranjit Debbarma went to the spot of the blockade which was underway since 9:45 am on Tuesday morning. A heated altercation erupted between the Tipra Motha leaders and the police officials posted there over the police department’s alleged reluctance to arrest the assailants who perpetrated the attack.
The Tipra Motha leaders demanded an assurance from the District Magistrate Gomati and there was a brief scuffle. Later, District Magistrate Rinku Lather, IG (L&O) Ipper Manchak and other senior officials rushed to the spot. They spoke to the leaders and assured that time-bound action shall be taken against those who had been involved in the attack after which the blockade was withdrawn.
Speaking on the issue, Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma said, “The 48-hour ultimatum for arrest of the accused persons was about to expire when the angry workers of the party resumed the blockade. The police informed us that two people had been detained in connection with the firing incident but the real mastermind who had been identified already was still at large. We have served an ultimatum of 72 hours for the police to arrest the remaining accused persons otherwise we shall resume our protests and this time the protests shall not be confined to Gamaria. All over Tripura, our workers shall take to the streets.”
IG Ipper Manchak said that all sorts of precautionary measures had been undertaken in the area followed by the incident.
“Two cases have been registered and investigation is being carried out in both the cases. The investigation shall proceed in its due course,” he said.
SDPO Udaipur Debanjali Roy said that two persons had been detained for interrogation. “The situation is now under control. The blockade has been withdrawn,” she said.
Meanwhile, sources said that simmering tension has been brewing in the area and Tipra Motha leaders and young activists were disappointed with the role of police in the investigation process.
The administration has clamped prohibitory orders under section 163 of the BNSS in order to prevent any untoward incident. The crowd including the MLAs and MDCs of Tipra Motha gathered at the place of protests flouting the provisions of the prohibitory orders, sources in the administration said.
