GMP eyes to enrol one lakh members by November end

Tripura Upajati Gana Mukti Parishad, the tribal arm of principal opposition CPIM has decided to enrol as many as one lakh members in the ongoing membership drive set to conclude on November 30, General Secretary of the CPIM’s frontal wing Radha Charan Debbarma told Tripura Times.

According to Debbarma, GMP commenced its membership drive from August this year. “In the last month’s review meeting we have seen that our total membership so far touched the 60,000 mark. We have been eyeing to touch the one lakh mark when the membership drive is concluded on November 30 next. The response we have been receiving on the ground is extremely positive and many people are voluntarily taking up memberships of our party,” said Debbarma.

On being asked about the eligibility criteria for availing the membership, Debbarma said, “We have a very simple system. During the membership drive, we conduct door to door visits and try to raise awareness among people about the party’s ideology and on what grounds we fight for the people. If someone is convinced, we welcome them under the red flag. Unlike other political parties, our membership collection process does not require clicking photos and mandatory social media show off.”

Stating that after 2018 elections it was for the first time he had witnessed extremely positive response from the public, Debbarma said, “In no previous membership drive after the 2018 assembly elections, we could achieve that much public participation.”

On being asked about the ensuing TTAADC elections scheduled next year, he said, “We shall definitely perform better compared to the last time. Our party has always been a strong force in the TTAADC. For some reasons we had failed but in the forthcoming elections, we shall fight with full strength.”
