Agartala, April 21: People of Agartala and other places in the State got a big respite from the ongoing heat wave as cloud overcast the sky on Friday afternoon. Soon downpours started with gusty winds and thunders. Even as the rain was not incessant, rain in spells and strong wind brought down the mercury to a comfort level.
Earlier, the IMD forecast showers on Friday and people suffering from scorching heat were keenly waiting for the rains which ultimately started and continued in spells till around 7 pm in the city area. In some places, people reported the occurrence of hail storms in the evening. Even as lightning and thunders accompanied the storm, there is no report of any injuries or property damage, so far.
The maximum temperature was recorded as 36.7 degrees Celsius, three degrees below normal. The minimum was recorded as 25.3 degrees Celsius, a degree below normal.
According to the Metrological Department, Agartala Center more rain with lightning is on the card. All the districts are likely to experience isolated rainfall on Saturday.
Our Kalyanpur correspondent adds: Kalbaishaki, the torrential rain with thunder hit hard Kalyanpur subdivision on Friday. Even as there is no report of any injuries or damage to property, so far, electric supply services were affected in various places under the sub-division.
According to Deputy General Manager of the State Electricity Corporation, Dipak Mandal, strong winds along with rain and thunder that started on Friday afternoon caused faults in the 33KV line that supplies electricity to Kalyanpur.
Owing to falling trees, the transmission lines in several areas were snapped, leading to power outages in Kalyanpur, Ampura, Komalnagar, Pashchim Ghilatali, Kalyanpur Hospital, and other distribution feeders.
The thunderstorm also disrupted internet and mobile services.
Meantime, the farmers of the sub-division also claimed that gusty winds affected standing crops. However, the amount of losses are to be verified and confirmed.
