The Tripura-Mizoram border dispute is confined to a small area around Phuldengsei village and will be resolved followed by discussions. A higher level meeting is expected on the issue, the Tripura Home Secretary Abhishek Singh said.
The remarks came after a four-member delegation led by the Mizoram Home Secretary visited Tripura for discussions on the long-pending border issue. The meeting was held in Agartala following a decision taken during a meeting of the North Eastern Council (NEC), where Tripura Chief Minister raised the border dispute with Mizoram.
“During the NEC meeting, the honourable Chief Minister raised the issue of the border dispute between Tripura and Mizoram. At that point of time, it was decided that a Home Secretary-level meeting shall be organised,” the Home Secretary said.
Accordingly, the first phase of the discussions was held in Agartala, with officials from both sides participating. The meeting involved an open discussion on documents and other records concerning the disputed area.
Officials also discussed documents related to the Survey of India, while the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police of North Tripura were involved in the discussions, the Home Secretary added.
“We have discussed documents related to the Survey of India. We shall submit the documents and hopefully a higher-level meeting shall be organised,” he said.
The Home Secretary said the dispute was limited to a small portion of the inter-state boundary and specifically referred to Phuldengsei village.
“The dispute is related to a very small portion. The conflict is limited to Phuldengsei,” he said.
He further said the issue involved the possession of the village council area and that the matter would ultimately be determined through the Survey of India.
“This village council was under possession. That will be decided by the Survey of India,” the Home Secretary said.
The latest meeting was part of the process agreed upon at the NEC level to address the border issue through discussions between senior officials of the two states.
The Home Secretary did not specify the date or venue of the proposed higher-level meeting. No further details were provided on the documents that the two sides agreed to submit.
