Politics met street food on Sunday as the BJP Mahila Morcha organized a “Jhalmuri Distribution Programme” in Kalyanpur, turning the local market into a festive ground for political outreach.
Â
The event, held at the Sonar Tori Mukta Mancha, saw senior BJP leaders address the gathering before stepping into the streets to hand out packets of jhalmuri to shopkeepers, workers, rickshaw pullers, and passersby. The initiative was designed to symbolize direct connection with ordinary citizens.
Â
The programme drew inspiration from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent gesture in West Bengal, where he bought and ate jhalmuri from a roadside stall during election campaigning. BJP leaders described the act as a reflection of the Prime Minister’s closeness to the people, and the Kalyanpur event sought to carry forward that sentiment.
Â
Local MLA Pinaki Das Choudhury, the chief speaker, used the occasion to sharply criticize opposition parties, particularly the Trinamool Congress. He said West Bengal’s political change was not just a BJP victory but a triumph for India’s culture and traditions. He added that Modi’s simple act of buying jhalmuri showed his respect and affection for common citizens.
Â
Other leaders including Meera Shil, Nitai Bal, Saraswati Debnath, Asim Debroy, and Purnendu Bhattacharya were present. Organizers said the goal was to strengthen BJP’s bond with everyday people, especially small traders and working-class communities.
Â
The distribution drive created a lively atmosphere in Kalyanpur market, with many calling the initiative unique and refreshing. For the BJP, the day was less about speeches and more about sharing food as a symbol of political connection.
