'Kishore', the runaway jumbo caught, GPS to be implanted on wild jumbos

Teliamura, Feb 25: The staff of Teliamura forest department finally able to find Kishore, a young elephant who escaped from Mungiakami elephant camp in Teliamura subdivision on Friday, Sabbir Kanti Das, the sub-divisional forest officer said.
Kishore all of a sudden in the evening stood up, tore apart the chains, injured mahout and escaped from the camp. LAter, the injured mahout was taken to hospital.
However, capture of the jumbo has brought a wave of relief among forest department employees and high-ranking officials.
Meanwhile, the wild elephant problem in Teliamura is not new. To get rid of this problem of wild elephants, the sub-divisional forest department has adopted a novel approach—by implanting GPS tracker on their body. At GPS tracker would be implanted on two elephants from the herd.
In this connection, the forest department officials along with a non-governmental organization from outside the state searched the deep forest area for wild elephants in Jumbari area of Teliamura sub-division. The GPS when implanted would give the forest officials the clear ideas of the wild elephant herd’s movements and as such time to prepare.
The District Forest Officer Akshay B. Bhadre said that the plan had been going on for a long time. Finally, the work of making it a reality started from Saturday, he added.
