Doctors at AGMC & GBP Hospital successfully implanted a Leadless Pacemaker—the first such procedure in the state's prime health institution—saving the life of a critically ill 71-year-old patient.
The patient had been admitted in an extremely critical condition with complete heart block, intraparenchymal hemorrhage, severe traumatic brain injury, and septic shock. His condition required an innovative, coordinated emergency response.
A multidisciplinary medical team from Emergency Medicine, Neurosurgery, Medicine ICU, and Cardiology worked jointly over several days to stabilise the patient. Once his condition allowed, the Cardiology Department performed the hospital’s first implantation of a leadless pacemaker, marking a significant advancement in cardiac care in Tripura.
Unlike traditional pacemakers—which require chest incisions and wires connected to the heart—this coin-sized device is delivered through a vein and placed directly inside the heart. The minimally invasive technique reduces infection risks and ensures speedy recovery, according to a government press release.
Hospital sources confirmed that the patient is now stable and showing rapid improvement.
Senior cardiologists said the success demonstrates the importance of thinking beyond conventional methods when treating critically ill patients. They described the achievement as a reflection of teamwork, expertise, and dedication across departments.
This achievement, according to medical experts, opened the door to new possibilities for treating severe cardiac conditions with fewer complications and faster recovery.
The medical team included Dr Anindya Sundar Tribedi (Assistant Professor & Consultant Cardiologist, Head of the Department), Dr Rakesh Das (Consultant Cardiologist), Dr Manna Bhattacharjya (Cardiologist), junior doctors- Dr Arghya Pratim Nath, Dr Anwesha Debnath and Dr Prantik Roy, Cath Lab nurses Debabrata Debnath, Prankrishna Deb, Manas Dutta and Titiksha Majumder, Echo technician Kishan Roy, and Cath Technician Sanjay Ghosh.
