LoP Jiten Chaudhury accuses Tripura Government of silencing media criticism

lop jiten chaudhury accuses tripura government of silencing media criticism

A storm of political controversy has erupted in Tripura after Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury accused the state government of systematically attempting to stifle the voice of the media whenever criticism is raised.

His remarks came in response to recent incidents where several YouTube channels, Facebook pages, and cable networks in the state allegedly faced suspension of broadcasts or disconnection of services.

Placing the issue of press freedom at the forefront, Chaudhury declared that questioning the government’s work or highlighting public grievances is a democratic right of every citizen, and equally the duty of the media. He described the press as the “fourth pillar of democracy”, stressing that its independence must be protected at all costs.

Chaudhury alleged that media outlets raising questions about dilapidated roads, erratic electricity supply, shortages of ration commodities like rice, pulses and sugar, repeated job notifications without recruitment, and delays in issuing appointment letters after TET and TRBT examinations have faced punitive action. He pointed to recent cases where cable channels were abruptly disconnected, calling such measures a direct assault on freedom of expression.

He further charged that under the current administration, newspapers are being subjected to pressure in multiple ways, including being denied government advertisements. “The role of the media is not to praise either the government or the opposition, but to present facts and truth in the public interest,” Chaudhury asserted.

Turning his focus to corruption, the Opposition Leader accused the government of failing to uphold its proclaimed policy of “zero tolerance.” He alleged that corruption continues to thrive across departments including PWD, Health, and Police, affecting officials from senior ranks down to grassroots employees, thereby damaging the state’s overall governance and credibility.

Chaudhury’s remarks have sparked debate across Tripura’s political and social circles, with his call for defending media freedom resonating strongly among journalists and civil society.
